Three Powerful Quotes from “The Most Reluctant Convert” (C.S. Lewis)

Whether you’re a proud Lewis disciple or a casual, I would highly recommend seeing The Most Reluctant Convert: The Untold Story of C.S. Lewis. This film is littered with sparkling one-liners and statements worth meditating on for days. I found the following quotes to be particularly moving (all of which are quotes or paraphrases from Lewis’s writings):

The hardness of God is kinder than the softness of men, and His compulsion is our liberation. (cf. Surprised by Joy, pp. 228-229)

I doubt whether anyone who has tasted [Joy] would ever, if both were in his power, exchange it for all the pleasures in the world. But then Joy is never in our power and Pleasure often is. (cf. Surprised by Joy, pp. 17-18)

Either this man was and is the Son of God, or else he is a liar, a lunatic or a fraud … But all this patronizing nonsense about him being some great moral teacher, it’s not an option to us, nor was it intended to be. (cf. Mere Christianity, pp. 55-56)
