Happy Lord’s Day, friend!
This past Sunday (9/8/24), I had the privilege of preaching on Ephesians 2:19-22 and our longing for home (watch here). Here’s a short excerpt from the sermon:
Think back to a person, place, or season you deeply miss.
Isn’t it tempting to think, “I just need to get back to the way things were—then I’ll be happy”?
Did you know that this is a lie?
In fact, this is the cruel lie of nostalgia:
Nostalgia says, “Your greatest joys are behind you. You need to get back to where you once were.”
The Gospel says, “Your greatest joys are ahead of you. Have faith. Don’t give up. The best is yet to come.”
We combat nostalgia’s lies in two ways:
- Earnestly thank God for the sweet times of the past. Don’t forget—they were gifts.
- Remember that the sweetest moments of this life are mere appetizers of what is to come. As C.S. Lewis put it: “There are far, far better things ahead than any we leave behind.”
The eternal home we long for is not behind us, but ahead of us—and the cornerstone of that home is Jesus Christ himself.
Jesus is the home your soul longs for today.
You can watch the sermon in the link below or on YouTube. You can also listen on SoundCloud.
I hope to have a full transcript uploaded to the website before too long—just wanted to put out the video in case you enjoy watching sermons on Sundays. 🙂
I pray the Lord blesses you through His Word!
~Blake
P.S. The sermon starts at the 30:00 mark.
Ephesians 2:19-22
19 So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, 20 built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone, 21 in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord. 22 In him you also are being built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit.
