On Snowflakes

I had a conversation with a friend yesterday about snowflakes.

(Like, literal snowflakes, to be clear.)

My friend is a naturalist by occupation. He told me every snowflake is different.

Billions upon billions upon billions of snowflakes every winter. Year after year, century after century, millennium after millennium.

Every single one is different.

It’s almost as if God is showing off: “My reservoir of creativity and beauty is so rich—literally infinite—that I’m happy to shower down billions of brand new, perfectly unique art masterpieces every winter. Billions. 99.999% of which you’ll never see—and the stray snowflake you catch in your hand will disappear in a half second.”

It’s as if the passing of time doesn’t deplete God’s creative beauty but multiplies it.

Will heaven get boring after 100, 1,000, 1 million, 10 billion years?

I picture God laughing at the thought: “Eternity won’t be long enough to exhaust the wealth of new joys I have for you.”

When Year 7,463,875,981,084 begins in heaven, God will say (yet again), “I can’t wait to show you the new beauties I have for you this year.”

And all of this beauty with sin removed? Oh, the bliss of this glorious thought!

Heaven really is everything we’ve ever longed for.
