Happy Lord’s Day.

Last weekend, I had the opportunity to preach on this phrase from the Apostles’ Creed: “I believe in Jesus Christ, His Only Son, Our Lord.”

What struck me most is the importance of making Jesus our Lord (and worshiping him as such).

Notice how an atheist novelist, David Foster Wallace, described the importance of choosing the right object of worship:

In the day-to-day trenches of adult life, there is actually no such thing as atheism. There is no such thing as not worshipping. Everybody worships. The only choice we get is what to worship. And an outstanding reason for choosing some sort of god or spiritual-type thing to worship . . . is that pretty much anything else you worship will eat you alive. If you worship money and things—if they are where you tap real meaning in life—then you will never have enough . . . Worship your own body and beauty and sexual allure, and you will always feel ugly . . . Worship power, and you will feel weak and afraid, and you will always need more power over others to keep the fear at bay. Worship being seen as smart—you will end up feeling stupid, a fraud, always on the verge of being found out. And so on.

Do you hear what he’s saying?

Every other object of worship—every ‘lord’ other than Jesus—will eat you alive when you serve and worship it. It’ll neither forgive you if you fail it nor satisfy you if you get it.

In a sense, we could say that Christ’s Lordship is an essential part of his salvation.

Jesus being Savior and Lord aren’t two completely different things.

Rather, Christ’s Lordship is precisely what saves us from every other lordship—His Lordship saves us from every earthly ‘lord’ (or idol) that demands our allegiance but never truly satisfies or saves us.
