“The Lord is on my side; I will not fear. What can man do to me?” (Psalm 118:6)
Happy New Year, friend!
I saw the movie David the other day, and I’m seeing it again tonight. It is so good. If you haven’t got a chance to see it yet, I would highly recommend it!
One of my favorite parts is the David and Goliath scene (here’s the buildup to the scene). Over and over again, young David shows himself unafraid of life’s biggest threats, knowing that God is on his side (see Psalm 118:6; also Psalm 23:4; 56:11).
I love his line: “It doesn’t matter how big he is. With God on our side, even I could fight him.”
The words “even I” show David’s humility. The words “With God… even I could…” show his confidence in God.
David’s hope wasn’t in his own strength, but in God’s. His security wasn’t in the size of his army, but in the size of his God, knowing the battle belongs to the Lord.
Sometimes the simplicity and purity of a child’s faith should confront us. Picture a child saying to a trembling parent, “Wait, why would we be afraid? God is with us!”
This is the kind of faith God welcomes us into: Not a false notion that tribulations won’t come, but a deep peace and security that even when trials do come, our Shepherd will be there, right next to us, welcoming us to find fresh refuge in his presence (see Psalm 23)—and reminding us that in the end, God always wins.
Lord, make us mature, not tossed to and fro by the waves. Yet give us the simple and innocent faith of a child, trusting that because you are with us, we have nothing to fear.
As we enter this new year, let’s remember that our hope is not in our own strength. Don’t make it your aim this year to overcome all of your weaknesses. Make it your aim to run to your strong God in all of your weaknesses.
May 2026 be a year of deeper confidence—not in ourselves, but in our Mighty God.
I am grateful for you!

P.S., A few weeks ago, I had the privilege of preaching on “Hope for Our Past, Present, and Future,” which feels fitting as we head into the New Year. You can listen to that message HERE.
